23 June 2006, 13:28  UK car output in 3 months to May up 1.6 pct from previous quarter

UK car production in the three months to May rose by 1.6 pct from the previous quarter, boosted by a pick up in exports, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed. Production allocated for the export market rose 2.3 pct but output for the home market slipped 0.8 pct. The figures were less rosy when compared with the same three months a year ago. Overall car production slumped 6.6 pct, with a hefty 22.4 pct drop in home market output. Production allocated for exports fell 0.6 pct Meanwhile, total commercial vehicle production for the three months to May fell 2.3 pct from the previous three-month period and 9.4 pct compared with the same period a year ago.
