1 June 2006, 10:45  Japan new vehicle sales fall for 11th straight month in May

Domestic sales of new cars, trucks and buses fell 7.8 pct year-on-year last month to 256,870 vehicles, falling for the 11th consecutive month, with rising prices of gasoline prompting a switch to mini-vehicles, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said. The association's figures exclude sales of mini-vehicles. It said car sales last month were down 10 pct at 214,420 vehicles, while sales of buses fell 3.4 pct to 1,014 and truck sales increased 5.1 pct to 41,436. Separately, the Japan Mini-vehicle Association reported that sales of mini-vehicles last month rose 0.7 pct year-on-year to 147,425, increasing for the fifth straight month. In May, sales fell at seven of Japan's 12 auto makers. Sales of regular-size cars fell at Toyota Motor Corp by 6.1 pct to 118,624 vehicles, at Nissan Motor Co by 20.4 pct to 41,667, at Honda Motor Co by 21.1 pct to 26,244, at Mazda Motor Corp by 6.8 pct to 16,288 and at Fuji Heavy Industries, which makes Subarus, by 4.5 pct to 5,984. Sales of regular-size cars at Mitsubishi Motor Corp rose by 13.7 pct to 4,457. Among truck makers, sales increased at Isuzu Motors Ltd by 21.8 pct to 6,258 vehicles, at Hino Motors, a Toyota subsidiary, by 6.4 pct to 3,358 and at Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp by 21.5 pct to 4,674. Sales at Nissan Diesel Motor Co sales were down 4.1 pct at 1,172. Among makers of mini-vehicles, sales at Suzuki Motor Corp rose 3 pct to 47,182 vehicles, at Mitsubishi Motor Corp by 15.7 pct to 12,431 and at Nissan by 54 pct to 9,994.
