18 May 2006, 17:28  Dollar flat against rivals after jobless claims data

The dollar was little changed against major rivals early Thursday, registering little reaction to a Labor Department report showing initial jobless claims at the highest level since early October. First-time applications for jobless benefits surged by 42,000 to 367,000 in the week ending May 13, but the gain was largely due to a partial government shutdown in Puerto Rico. It was the largest weekly gain since early September, the report said. The euro was last up 0.3% at $1.2778, while the dollar traded flat at 111.04 yen
