20 April 2006, 17:09  Dollar edges higher after jobless claims data

The dollar moved a touch higher after data showed U.S. jobless claims fell by 10,000 to 303,000 in the week ending April 15. The consensus forecast of Wall Street economists was for claims to inch lower by 3,000 to 310,000. The four-week average of initial claims fell 2,250 to 305,250. This is the lowest level since the week ended Feb. 25. "Though the data may have been impacted a bit by Easter, the trend in claims is nevertheless consistent with another healthy employment report for March," said research firm Action Economics. In early New York trading, the euro weakened 0.4% to $1.2328, while the dollar rose 0.3% to 117.71
