20 April 2006, 12:19  IMF, Rato: IMF needs to focus more on exchange rates

IMF managing director Rodrigo Rato said the fund needs to focus more on exchange rates in its assessment of ways of resolving global current account imbalances. "There must be more emphasis on exchange rates, and especially a more comprehensive assessment of the relationship of exchange rate policies to national and international stability," Rato said in an article in the International Herald Tribune. The IMF should also focus on advice to individual countries where economic developments or vulnerabilities may have significant regional or global impact, he said. Rato said there is a danger of a disorderly adjustment of current account imbalances as a result of inaction or unbalanced actions. "Some believe the problems will gradually solve themselves. Others emphasise the need for action -- but by other countries," he said.
