21 March 2006, 15:25  Bubaґs Weber: ECB will react "appropriately" to any perceived inflationary risks

Bundesbank President Axel Weber said the European Central Bank will react "appropriately" to any perceived risks to price stability. Speaking to reporters at the Bundesbank annual results conference, Weber said the last two rate increases undertaken by the ECB showed it had reacted appropriately to recent developments. "(And) we will (continue to) react appropriately to risks that we see," said ECB Governing Council member Weber. Weber said current interest rates do not pose a barrier to economic growth in Germany. He said the Bundesbank expects GDP growth this year to be around 1.5 pct and at 1.1 pct in 2007. "(GDP) will be somewhat volatile in the next two to three years but the basic (growth) trend of the economy remains intact," he said.
