The International Monetary Fund expects Italian GDP to rise 0.2 pct this year and 1.6 pct next year, beating the government's own forecasts, Alessandro Leipold, head of the institution's delegation in Italy, said at a press conference. The government forecast GDP will be be flat this year and rise 1.5 pct in 2006 Leipold also said he expects Italy to reach its public deficit target of 4.3 pct of GDP this year, after the government recently announced austerity measures.
