13 October 2005, 15:45  BOE Walton: Interest rate policy has been appropriate

Asked whether there should be some measure of housing costs included in consumer price inflation, Walton said "I think some measure of housing costs should be included in CPI," adding that he believed it was a weakness of the current system that they aren't included. But he added that people should not "read too much into the current level of inflation" with regard to interest rate policy, since the MPC targets inflation in the medium term. He said the aim of the MPC's monetary policy should be to keep demand and supply in the economy "broadly in line." Asked if he thought that current interest rate levels in the U.K. imply the MPC is putting the accelerator on the economy, Walton said "I don't think so."
