13 October 2005, 11:36  Tokyo shares close mixed after Wall St's overnight slump

Share prices closed mixed, with some futures-related buying offset by the effect on sentiment of Wall Street's slide overnight, dealers said. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average ended the day down 14.50 points or 0.1 pct at 13,449.24, while the broader-based TOPIX index of all First Section issues ended up 0.90 point or 0.1 pct at 1,407.79. Decliners outnumbered gainers 910 to 651, with 102 issues unchanged. Volume reached 2.30 bln shares, down from 3.1 bln yesterday. "Losses on Wall Street overnight were behind the falls today," said Seiichi Suzuki, market analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities. Dissipating foreign investor interest added to the downbeat tone in the market here, with foreigners placing net buy orders for just 2.1 mln shares ahead of the opening today, against 32.4 mln shares yesterday, he said. "However, trading was pretty volatile today, with speculators closing their positions ahead of special quotations for options, due tomorrow, which sent the TOPIX into positive territory," said Nikko Cordial Corp equity general manager Hiroichi Nishi.
