9 August 2005, 15:45  OPEC says recently boosted output by 300,000 barrels per day

OPEC has boosted its production by 300,000 barrels a day in the last several weeks in the face of surging oil prices, an OPEC spokesman said. The cartel is now turning out 30.4 mln barrels a day, he added. "OPEC is as concerned as everybody about the sudden spike in oil prices and we are doing what we have to by increasing actual production," he said, contacted by telephone at OPEC headquarters in Vienna. "We are doing our share, we are meeting our responsibility." But he stressed that "nothing is being ruled out". The next OPEC ministerial meeting is scheduled for Sept 19 in Vienna. World oil prices hit new historic heights early today following the security scare in Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest crude exporter, traders said, and as supply concerns persisted in the US. New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in September, rose 17 cents to 64.11 usd per barrel after striking an all-time high of 64.27 usd per barrel overnight. In London, the price of Brent North Sea crude oil for delivery in September rose 10 cents to 62.80 usd today after earlier hitting a record 63.06 usd per barrel. But prices later eased, falling to 63.82 usd in New York and 62.55 in London.
