24 August 2005, 10:11  Japan July department store sales rise 1.1 pct year-on-year

Sales at department stores opened for at least one year rose 1.1 pct in July from a year earlier to 764.5 bln yen, the Japan Department Stores Association said. Including sales at stores opened the past year, revenue increased 0.4 pct. In June, sales were up 1.4 pct on an adjusted basis, and rose 0.6 pct on an unadjusted basis. Sales at department stores last month rose in five of eight product categories, the association said. Sales of clothing, the largest product category accounting for 37.5 pct of total revenue, rose 2.0 pct from a year earlier. Sales of food, accounting for 28.7 pct of the total, fell 0.6 pct. Sales of furniture and home appliances, a category accounting for 12.4 pct of the total, increased 0.6 pct. Sales of personal belongings, accounting for 11.7 pct of total revenue, rose 4.3 pct. Sales of everyday household products, accounting for 4.7 pct of overall revenue, fell 5.4 pct. Sales at store restaurants and cafeterias, accounting for 2.5 pct of total revenue, dropped 3.7 pct. Revenue from services, which account for just 0.8 pct of total sales, rose 6.4 pct, and sales of miscellaneous items, another minor category making up 1.7 pct of total revenue, jumped 25.5 pct.
