24 August 2005, 09:55  Japan July supermarket sales down 2.3 pct year-on-year

Sales at supermarkets in Japan opened for at least one year fell 2.3 pct in July from a year earlier to 1.22 trln yen, the Japan Chain Stores Association said. Including sales at stores opened over the past year, revenue was unchanged from a year earlier. In June, adjusted sales fell 2.2 pct from a year earlier and flat on an unadjusted basis. The association said sales fell in four of the five product categories last month. Sales of food -- the largest category accounting for 58.3 pct of overall revenue in July -- fell 2.6 pct from a year earlier. Sales of household products, which accounted for 19.7 pct of overall revenue, declined 2.1 pct. Sales of clothing, accounting for 14.0 pct of the total, fell 2.0 pct. Sales of miscellaneous goods, accounting for 7.1 pct, dropped 1.8 pct. But revenue from services, a small category accounting for less than 1 pct of the total, rose 3.8 pct.
