15 August 2005, 13:31 London retail sales slump in July after July bombings
Retail sales in London slumped in July after the bombings and attempted bombings during the month, a survey showed today.
According to the London Retail Consortium, underlying sales dived 8.9 pct in July compared with same month last year -- the lowest since the series began in 2002.
In June, a 3.6 pct rise was recorded.
The London bombings hit trade hard on July 7 and 21. Sales recovered a little but continued to be depressed by tube disruptions, numerous security alerts and consumer anxiety, the survey found.
The sharp reduction in underlying sales in central London compares with a smaller decline of 1.9 pct for the UK as a whole
