8 July 2005, 14:36  OECD May composite leading indicator 103.0

The OECD said its composite leading indicator was 103.0 in May, unchanged from its April level. The April figure was revised from a provisional 103.1. The OECD said analysis of the CLI data still points to slowing activity in the advanced economies in the period ahead. The CLI summarises information contained in a number of key short-term indicators known to be linked to GDP and provides early signals of turning points between expansions and slowdowns in economic activity, the OECD said. Such turning points are highlighted by the so-called six-month rate of change in the CLI, which compares the current month's CLI figure with the average of the previous 12 months. On this basis, the CLI declined an annualised 0.6 pct in May, the same as the decline recorded in April. For the US, the CLI edged up to 101.6 from 101.5 and its six-month rate of change improved after fall sharply in the previous three months. But the CLI for the euro zone fell to 104.8 from 105.0, and six-month ratŠµ of change continued a decline which started in Dec 2003.
