29 July 2005, 14:42  UK: July, Consumer confidence index improves to -1 from -3 in June

Consumer confidence in the UK remained resilient in July even after the first terrorist attacks in London, a survey found today. GfK Martin Hamblin said its main consumer confidence headline index increased to 1 in July from 3 in June and expectations of a decline to -4. The first half of interviewing for the survey took place prior to the terrorist attacks on July 7 and the second half of interviewing took place after. Interviews were already finished by the time the second wave of attempted bombings took place on July 21. "Interestingly the index figure was actually higher amongst respondents in the second wave of interviewing than the first," said Reza Chady, director at GfK Martin Hamblin. "This is another demonstration of people's defiance over the recent events," Chady added. A more detailed look at the survey shows that the headline index was driven by an improvement in the major purchases measure, which rose to +12 in July from +4 in June.
