Manufacturing activity in the New York area continued to rebound in July, the New York Federal Reserve Bank said Friday. The bank's Empire State Manufacturing index rose to 23.9 in July from a revised 10.5 in June. The index continues to climb after hitting a two-year low of -11.1 in May. Readings over zero indicate expansion. Economists were expecting the index to remain steady at about 11.6 in July. Despite the increase there was no improvement in labor-market conditions. The employment index slipped to 1.4 in July from 5.5 in June. However, the average workweek increased to 1.8 in July from -3.7 in the previous month.
