The U.S. dollar rose against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday. Gold prices fell. The euro was quoted at US$1.2172, down from US$1.2232 late Tuesday in New York. Other dollar rates compared with late Tuesday: -- 111.43 Japanese yen, up from 110.90 -- 1.2802 Swiss francs, up from 1.2713 -- 1.2055 Canadian dollars, up from 1.2040 The British pound traded at US$1.7634, down from US$1.7765. Gold traded in London at US$425.55 bid per troy ounce, down from US$426.20 on Tuesday. In Zurich the bid price was US$425.30, down from US$426.43. Gold fell US$1.70 in Hong Kong to close at US$425.75. Silver traded in London at US$7.03 bid per troy ounce, down from US$7
