11 July 2005, 13:56  UK govt says May house prices up 6.0%

UK annual house price inflation slowed to 6.0 pct in May from 6.9 pct in April, according to figures released by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The rise is slightly above the forecasts of analysts polled by AFX News, who had on average expected a rise of 5.7 pct. Between April and May, prices rose by 0.5 pct, compared with a rise of 1.3 pct seen in the same period last year. The rise can be attributed largely to rises in the prices of terraced and detached houses which both rose by 1.0, while prices for flats remained constant, the ODPM said. The average house price in the UK in May stood at 182,651 stg, up from the 181,832 recorded in April. Annual house price inflation fell in all regions except Yorkshire and the Humber between April and May, the ODPM said. The lowest annual inflation rate was in London, where prices rose by just 1.6 pct from a year earlier, compared with a rate of 2.7 pct in April, it said.
