1 July 2005, 10:11  Japan June new vehicle sales up 8.6 % yr/yr

Domestic sales of new cars, trucks and buses, excluding mini-vehicles, rose 8.6 pct in June from a year earlier to 351,061 vehicles, just the fifth increase in 17 months, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) said. Passenger car sales rose 8.6 pct to 300,708 vehicles, while truck sales increased 9.0 pct to 49,146. Bus sales, however, fell 8.2 pct to 1,207. Separately, the Japan Mini-Vehicle Association reported that mini-vehicle sales in June rose 5.1 pct from a year earlier to 166,378, the third increase in six months. Mini-vehicles account for about one in every three vehicles sold in Japan. Sales in June rose at nine of Japan's 12 vehicle makers, including at all five of the nation's largest passenger car makers. At industry leader Toyota Motor Corp, which makes more than four of every 10 new cars sold in Japan, sales increased 1.8 pct to 148,631 vehicles. At Nissan Motor Co, which released six new models over a half year period through January in an effort to rejuvenate what had been sagging domestic sales, sales of regular-sized vehicles jumped 18.3 pct to 69,142.
