The United Arab Emirates proposed making ``major'' changes to a 1974 border agreement with Saudi Arabia, the Emirati foreign affairs minister said. The 1974 accord ``can't be implemented, and parts of it need major amendments,'' said Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who is also deputy prime minister, the state-owned WAM news agency reported today. Al-Nahyan plans to visit Saudi Arabia soon and meet with Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz to reach a final agreement on the borders, WAM reported. The two countries are in negotiations on a shared oil field, which is called Shaybah in Saudi Arabia and Zrarah in the United Arab Emirates, London-based Saudi newspaper al-Hayat reported June 15, citing unidentified Emirati officials. The United Arab Emirates wants to pump oil from the field, which lies 90 percent within the Saudi borders, the paper said. Saudi Arabia currently produces about 560,000 barrels of oil a day from Shaybah, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
