German Finance Minister Hans Eichel Thursday flatly denied media reports and accusations from opposition party lawmakers that he has discussed a possible end of the European Monetary Union. "There has been at no time a discussion in which I participated about a breakup of the monetary union," Eichel told the lower house of parliament. "It's irresponsible" that lawmakers repeat this accusation again Thursday after the finance ministry and also the Bundesbank rejected media reports Wednesday, he said. "There is nothing to it," he added. A report in weekly magazine Stern published Wednesday said a meeting took place last week between Eichel, Bundesbank President Axel Weber and market economists and that a possible failure of EMU was discussed at the meeting.
