4 May 2005, 17:58  Sterling gained half a percent against dollar

Sterling gained half a percent against a broadly weaker dollar on Wednesday, showing few nerves ahead of Thursday's UK general election. The dollar fell against most major currencies after the Federal Reserve delivered its eighth consecutive rate hike on Tuesday but signalled little new concern about inflation. News from Britain provided little impetus for sterling to trade on and markets were waiting for Thursday's general election in the UK which is widely expected to deliver a victory to the ruling Labour Party.
