Surprisingly strong first quarter growth in the German economy does not necessarily herald an upturn for the rest of the year, ECB Governing Council member Axel Weber said on Thursday. Weber, who is also president of the Deutsche Bundesbank, was speaking to reporters before he gave a speech on financial markets at a banking conference. The ECB was sticking with its wait-and-see monetary policy given mixed signals about economic growth. "That is light at the end of the tunnel, but not an all-clear for economic growth." Weber said the Bundesbank had expected a dynamic first quarter, although growth was almost exclusively driven by exports since the domestic economy was not particularly good.
