UK blue chips opened higher as investors took heart from BP's better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, which helped offset weakness in Whitbread on disappointing full-year results, dealers said. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 85 points at 10,242, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 18 points, to 1,950.
