22 February 2005, 09:33  Tokyo Stocks Open Lower; Dollar Down Against Yen but Up Versus Euro

Tokyo stocks opened lower Tuesday in the absence of fresh news following a market holiday in the United States. The U.S. dollar was down against the Japanese yen but up versus the euro.
The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues lost 14.55 points, or 0.12 percent, to 11,636.47 points shortly after the open. The index fell 9.10 points, or 0.08 percent, Monday.
The dollar was trading at 105.46 yen at 9 a.m. (0000 GMT) Tuesday, down 0.22 yen from late Monday in Tokyo and also below the 105.55 yen it bought in European trading later that day.
Stock prices slipped in early Tokyo trading as investors lacked market-moving news after Wall Street and other U.S. financial markets closed Monday for Presidents Day holiday.
The broader TOPIX index, which includes all issues on the market's first section, dipped 0.37 points, or 0.03 percent, to 1,166.37 points early Tuesday. The TOPIX gained 0.17 points, negligible in percentage terms, the day before.
In currencies, the euro slipped to US$1.3062 early Tuesday in Tokyo from US$1.3064 late Monday and to 137.82 yen from 138.10 yen.
