18 February 2005, 13:51  Dollar Up Slightly Against Euro

The U.S. dollar made marginal gains Friday against the euro, but the 12-nation European currency remained above the US$1.30 mark.
The euro was at US$1.3061 in midmorning European trading, down from US$1.3068 late Thursday, when it gained after briefly losing ground to the dollar on better-than-expected U.S. economic data.
The dollar retreated slightly against the Japanese yen, buying 105.36 yen -- down from 105.51 yen Thursday. It also fell against the British pound, which advanced to US$1.8963 from US$1.8946.
The euro soared from about US$1.20 in September to an all-time high of US$1.3667 at the end of December, powered by concerns over the ballooning U.S. trade and budget deficits. It has since leveled off around US$1.30, but worries over the deficits are keeping the dollar from recovering further.
