6 January 2005, 15:56  Dollar Climbs Against Other Major Currencies, Gold Is Down in Europe

The U.S. dollar rose Thursday morning against other major currencies in European trading. Gold prices fell.
The euro was quoted at $1.3184 by late morning in Europe, down from $1.3271 late Wednesday in Europe. The 12-nation European currency was nearly 5 cents short of its all-time high of $1.3667 reached a week ago.
Other dollar rates compared with late rates Wednesday: 105.06 Japanese yen, up from 103.82; 1.1758 Swiss francs, up from 1.1677, and 1.2312 Canadian dollars, up from 1.2248.
The British pound was quoted at $1.8710, up from $1.8878.
Gold dealers in London fixed a recommended price of $425.80 per troy ounce at midmorning, down from $427.60 on Wednesday. In Zurich, the bid price was $425.63, down from $427.03.
Gold fell $1.30 in Hong Kong to $425.75.
Silver opened in London at $6.49 bid per troy ounce, down from $6.51.
