5 January 2005, 15:56  Dollar Is Higher, Gold Is Mixed

The U.S. dollar rose Wednesday morning against other major currencies in European trading. Gold prices were mixed.
The euro was quoted at $1.3232, down from $1.3304 late Tuesday. The euro has retreated from its record high of $1.3667 set last Thursday.
Other dollar rates compared with late Tuesday included: 104.92 Japanese yen, up from 103.97; 1.1742 Swiss francs, up from 1.1655, and 1.2316 Canadian dollars, up from 1.2233.
The British pound was quoted at $1.8737, down from $1.8864.
Gold dealers in London fixed a recommended price of $425.50 per troy ounce at midmorning, down from $425.80 on Tuesday. In Zurich the bid price was $425.95, up from $425.05. Gold fell 40 cents in Hong Kong to $427.05.
Silver opened in London at $6.41 bid per troy ounce, up from $6.35.
