30 November 2004, 09:28  Wal-Mart damps holidays cheer on Wall St

US stocks turned in a mixed performance on Wall Street on Monday as weakness at Wal-Mart damped enthusiasm about a strong start to the holiday shopping season. Meanwhile, more bullish signals from Apple Computer, the year's hottest stock, gave a lift to consumer technology shares.
The S&P 500 ended down 4.08 points, or 0.3 per cent at 1,178.57 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 46.33 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 10,475.90. The Nasdaq Composite edged up 0.2 per cent to 2,106.87.
The session's seesaw activity - all within a relatively narrow band - spoke volumes about the conflicted opinions on Wall Street, but also about the persistency of the market's current bullishness. /www.news.ft.com/
