26 October 2004, 14:03  UK manufacturing business confidence slips - CBI

British manufacturers' business confidence deteriorated to its weakest level since the middle of last year in the three months to October, a survey showed on Tuesday. The Confederation of British Industry's quarterly industrial trends survey business situation balance slipped to -10 in October from +7 in the July survey. That was the lowest since the -13 recorded in July 2003. At the same time, the CBI said its monthly order book balance slipped to -12 in October from -6 in September, the lowest since April. "There are clear threats to the manufacturing sector," said Ian McCafferty, chief economic adviser to the CBI. "Taking into account everything else we know about the economy as well, we urge the Bank of England to keep interest rates on hold for the foreseeable future."///
