30 June 2004, 10:23  Tokyo stocks end flat ahead of tankan

Tokyo shares ended flat on Wednesday with buying in blue-chips like Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> largely offsetting losses in retailers in quiet trade ahead of the Bank of Japan's much-awaited "tankan" poll of corporate sentiment. Dealers also said that purchasing by domestic institutional investors to dress up their portfolios at the end of the month helped lend support to the market. The Nikkei average <.N225> finished down 0.02 percent or 1.94 point at 11,858.87 after trading in a very narrow range for the whole day. It had ended lower on Tuesday for the first time in four sessions, falling 0.20 percent from a nine-week closing high marked the previous day. The broader TOPIX index <.TOPX> ended up 0.22 percent at 1,189.60.|||
