18 June 2004, 16:12  Germany says accepts EU constitution proposals

Germany said on Friday it accepted the latest compromise proposals put forward by European Union president Ireland for a first constitution for the enlarged bloc but would go no further. "Germany is ready to accept this suggestion of the presidency. No further changes," government spokesman Bela Anda told reporters on the final day of a crucial summit. French President Jacques Chirac earlier made a similar comment but Poland and a separate group of 13 small countries were holding out for further modifications in the proposed voting system to improve their influence on EU decision making.///
