6 May 2004, 10:20  Wall St gains held by rate worries

Leading Wall St shares made slow headway in early trading with gains limited amid investor concerns over rising oil prices and the prospect of a hike in interest rates. By mid-morning the Dow Jones was up 1.22 points to 10,316.98 and the Nasdaq had gained 8.99 points to 1,959.47. US stocks opened close to unchanged as investors digested the Federal Reserve's decision to gradually raise interest rates and worries about higher oil prices tempered investor sentiment.
Investors were also concerned that oil prices, which hit a 13-year high today, could impact on business profits. In corporate news, soft drinks giant Coca-Cola shares gained almost 1pc after it managed to find a new chief executive following exhaustive searches for a willing candidate for the role. Shares in computer maker Dell climbed 2pc after Banc of America Securities upgraded the stock to "buy" and raised its 12-month earnings forecast for the firm citing better than expected sales prospects in the coming quarters. //www.fxcentre.com
