5 April 2004, 09:06  Nikkei hits 12.000, first time since May 2002

Tokyo's Nikkei average <.N225> jumped above the 12,000 line in early Monday afternoon trade as exporters and technology shares were bought after strong U.S. jobs data lifted Wall Street and boosted the dollar. The Nikkei gained 1.59 percent to 12,003.89 by 0332 GMT, the highest intraday level since May 27, 2002. On Friday, it rose 1.13 percent to close at 11,815.95 -- its highest closing level since June 3, 2002. The broader TOPIX index <.TOPX> advanced 1.47 percent to 1,201.56.///
