29 April 2004, 13:06  US current acct. gap still a worry - ECB's Garganas

The world economic outlook is improving, but the widening U.S. current account deficit remains a concern, European Central Bank Governing Council member Nicholas Garganas said on Thursday. "The U.S.'s large and expanding current account deficit is still a source of worry, because it could lead to sudden readjustments of exchange rates, a surge in inflation and an increase in interest rates in the international money markets," Garganas said in a speech ahead of the central bank's annual meeting. Speaking on exchange rates, Garganas said he favoured a stabilisation in the euro/dollar exchange rate.|||
