16 March 2004, 17:37  US stocks jump at open after Monday's rout

Stocks climbed at Tuesday's open as a forecast of higher profit from manufacturer 3M Co. helped buoy sentiment after Monday's selling that knocked the market to lows for the year. The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> climbed 58 points, or 0.58 percent to 10,161. The technology-studded Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> rose 16 points, or 0.85 percent, to 1,955. The S&P 500 Index <.SPX> advanced 6 points, or 0.61 percent, to 1,111. Wall Street will tune in to the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting for hints on how the central bank views the outlook for the U.S. economy and jobs, but no change in borrowing costs is expected.
