17 February 2004, 11:58  Sterling hits 11-year high vs dollar

LONDON, Feb 17 - Sterling hit a fresh 11-year high versus the dollar on Tuesday as investors snapped up high-yielding currencies and punished the U.S. currency. Earlier in the day, the Australian and New Zealand dollars, both considered to enjoy relatively high interest rates along with sterling, hit seven-year highs on the greenback. At 0850 GMT, sterling traded as high as $1.8992 , up 0.4 percent on the day, and at its highest level since September 1992. Against the rising euro it was slightly weaker on the day at 67.65 .//
