27 January 2004, 10:46  EU's Prodi - French budget forecast optimistic

PARIS, Jan 27 - France's budget forecasts for the coming years are based on optimistic economic projections, European Commission head Romano Prodi said on Tuesday, reflecting fears that Paris will struggle to tame its deficit. "It is not possible to say that France or the other countries will not respect their budget commitments, but we have noted that they are basing their forecasts on slightly optimistic data as usual," Prodi told Europe 1 radio. France has pledged to reduce its deficit to 2.9 percent of gross domestic product in 2005, just below the three percent ceiling set out in the European Union's Stability and Growth Pact.||
