21 January 2004, 09:36  Nikkei ends down 0.91% after 3-day winning streak

TOKYO, Jan 21 - Japan's Nikkei average dipped on Wednesday as investors took profits on blue chips like Sony Corp <6758.T> that had helped power the Nikkei to a three-month high on optimism ahead of the earnings season. Consumer electronics giant Sony dipped 1.13 percent to 4,360 yen, helping pull the Nikkei average down 0.91 percent to 11,002.39. The Nikkei had risen four percent in the previous three sessions and on Tuesday ended at its highest level since late October. Hoya Corp <7741.T> rose 2.21 percent to 10,650 yen after its quarterly earnings report confirmed that the lens maker had been enjoying strong profits due to a surge in orders from makers of digital cameras, chips and liquid crystal displays. The capital-weighted TOPIX index <.TOPX> ended down 0.52 percent at 1,070.35.//
