14 January 2004, 17:40  US stocks rise with all eyes on earnings

NEW YORK, Jan 14 - Stocks opened higher on Wednesday, helped by a report that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed unexpectedly, but the focus was on earnings as expectations ran high for strong scorecards from technology bellwether Intel Corp. and others. Intel, Apple Computer Inc. and Internet search engine Yahoo! will all report earnings after the closing bell. The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 19.26 points, or 0.18 percent, to 10,446.44. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 1.72 points, or 0.15 percent, at 1,122.94. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> gained 8.05 points, or 0.38 percent, to 2,104.49.//
