29 December 2003, 09:25  Japan's Nikkei ends above 10.500; banks sought

TOKYO, Dec 29 - Japan's Nikkei average rose above 10,500 to end at a seven-week high on Monday as investors bought Mitsubishi Financial and other financial shares on hopes a good start for Wall Street next year will boost Tokyo stocks. Technology shares were also higher after Wall Street posted gains and the dollar's slide against the yen stalled for now. The benchmark Nikkei average <.N225> ended up 0.80 percent at 10,500.62, the highest close since November 10. The broader TOPIX index <.TOPX> climbed 0.76 percent to 1,026.24.//
