11 December 2003, 10:45  Dollar keeps firm tone vs euro in early Europe

LONDON, Dec 11 - The dollar firmed against the euro on Thursday and held steady on the yen after suspected yen-selling intervention by Japan in the previous session helped stop the greenback's broad slide. But at $1.2269 per euro it was barely a cent above record lows against the single currency and it was within two yen of three year lows against the Japanese currency, with little hope of escaping the current account deficit worries that have weakened it. At 0740 GMT, the dollar was nearly half a percent higher against the euro. On Tuesday it hit record lows against the euro for the eighth day in a row. The dollar was flat on the yen at 108.22 and nearly half a percent higher on the Swiss franc . The European Central Bank's monthly report is due at 0900 GMT. U.S. initial jobless claims are due at 1330 GMT and are expected to show 360,000 new filings. Disappointing jobless figures last Friday weighed heavily on the greenback. U.S. retail sales are also due at 1330 GMT.//www..com
