11 November 2003, 11:32  France's Mer says to do maximum to cut deficit

NAPLES, Italy, Nov 11 - French Finance Minister Francis Mer said on Tuesday he would do his utmost to show France's capacity to cut its bulging public deficit at a meeting with EU peers later this month. Speaking to reporters in Naples, Mer also said he expected supplementary measures that he would unveil to other EU finance ministers would be well received and added that it would not be in the EU's interest to take further disciplinary measures against Paris over its deficit. "I will do the maximum to show the capacity of our country to get its deficit below three percent (of GDP) in 2005, with the most credible route possible in 2004," Mer said.//
