WASHINGTON, Oct 30 - U.S. employment costs in the third quarter of 2003 rose on climbing health and pension benefit costs for workers, a government report said on Thursday. The Labor Department said its Employment Cost Index, a broad gauge of what employers pay in wages, salaries and benefits, increased 1 percent in the July through September period. The rise was in line with the expectations of analysts polled by , who had forecast a 0.9 percent rise. The 6.5 percent jump in benefits costs for civilian workers over the year ending in September was the highest third-quarter to third-quarter increase since September 1990.||
