3 October 2003, 14:41  Solbes says no decision on French recommendation

MADRID, Oct 3 - European Union Monetary Affairs Commissioner Pedro Solbes said on Friday that the European Commission had not yet taken a decision on whether it would present a new recommendation to France on how to reduce its budget deficit. Solbes said the European Commission had given France until October 3 to say how it would get its deficit, which has broken European Union limits in 2002 and 2003 and is set to do so in 2004, under three percent of Gross Domestic Product. "France must take its measures. The period ends today. The commission cannot therefore start to act before tomorrow," he told before taking part in a seminar in Madrid. "The following step is to see whether or not they have complied with the recommendation. The commission will then take a decision on presenting a (new) recommendation, but on this point nothing has yet been decided," Solbes said.//
