17 October 2003, 09:33 Japan Sept trade surplus seen up on strong exports
TOKYO, Oct 17 - Strong exports, especially to Asia,
probably boosted Japan's trade surplus in September from the same
month a year ago, according to economists polled by .
The median forecast from 23 economists was for a 1.20
trillion yen ($10.9 billion) trade surplus, up 14 percent from
last September.
Exports are likely to have risen 7.4 percent year-on-year and
imports probably gained 5.4 percent, they said.
"The trade surplus is likely to show a double digit gain for
the second month in a row led by an uptrend in exports to Asia,"
said Koji Takeuchi, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute
who forecast a trade surplus of 1.244 trillion yen.
"There will be some impact from the recent rise in the yen,
but it will not change the trend," he said. ///
