4 September 2003, 14:06  Germany's Eichel says he favours a strong euro

FRANKFURT, Sept. 4 - Germany's Finance Minister Hans Eichel said on Thursday that he favours a strong euro but no rapid movement in currency rates. "I have always said that a strong euro is in our interests. But what can be in no one's interest are strong and abrupt movements," he said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. Eichel also said that he would envisage the sale of only small quantities of gold by the Bundesbank if a new international agreement on gold sales is reached. "The gold market is sensitive and if the Bundesbank takes part in a new gold agreement, they can only enter the market in small amounts," he said. Politicians have discussed requiring gold sales by the Bundesbank to help plug Germany's budget deficit.//
