26 September 2003, 10:04  German import prices rose 0.8% m/m in August

BERLIN, Sept 26 - Costlier crude oil, cocoa and aluminium helped lift German import prices 0.8 percent month on month in August, the Federal Statistics Office said on Friday. Compared with August 2002, import prices were 1.7 percent lower, underscoring that price pressures in Europe's largest economy remain weak. Excluding mineral oils, import prices rose 0.3 percent month on month but also fell 1.7 percent year on year. While cocoa in August was 7.1 percent more expensive than in July it was still 25 percent cheaper than in August 2002, the Office said. Similarly, aluminium was nearly six percent cheaper on the year despite a month-on-month price increase of 4.3 percent. Analysts polled by had forecast import prices rising 0.3 percent month on month and declining 2.3 percent year on year. In July, import prices rose 0.2 percent month on month and fell 2.0 percent year on year.//
