8 August 2003, 15:06  Canadian July jobless rate rises to 7.8%

OTTAWA, Aug 8 - Canada's unemployment rate rose to 7.8 percent in July when 13,300 jobs were lost, mainly among teachers and hotel and restaurant workers, Statistics Canada said on Friday. Analysts polled by had forecast, on average, that the jobless rate would remain unchanged from June's 7.7 percent level and that 5,000 jobs would be added to the labor market. "Although employment in manufacturing was little changed in July, it is down 61,000 (-2.6 percent) over the first seven months of 2003, due primarily to continued weakness in Ontario," Statscan said. Part-time employment fell by 17,600 in July while 4,300 full-time workers were hired last month, Statscan added. The services sector of the economy, which accounts for about two thirds of gross domestic product, shed 18,500 jobs. The goods sector added 5,200 jobs -- of which 2,600 were in manufacturing and 9,700 in construction.
