7 August 2003, 14:03  German June industry output falls 0.2 pct

BERLIN, Aug 7 - German industrial output fell 0.2 percent in June, undershooting analysts' forecasts for a rise, economy ministry data showed on Thursday, with manufacturing production hit by strikes in eastern Germany during the month. "Manufacturing volumes in industry were cut by 0.9 percent through the strike in the engineering sector in June," the ministry said in a statement. The fall in June production, which includes output at factories, power stations and building sites, compared to a consensus forecast for a rise of 0.5 percent month-on-month in a poll of 24 economists. The forecast range in the poll was between a fall of 1.5 percent and a rise of 2.1 percent . Output in the richer western states was down 0.5 percent in June, while production in the former East German states was unchanged. Construction output rose 3.6 percent in June, the ministry said, after a decline of 3.3 percent the previous month. Production of cars, plant and equipment and other "capital goods" fell 2.9 percent in June. Output of consumer goods rose 0.3 percent. Energy output was up 2.8 percent and production of intermediate goods rose 0.5 percent. Year-on-year, production fell 1.9 percent, according to a calculation. Analysts had predicted a fall of 1.2 percent. The output data came after manufacturing orders posted a sharp 2.3 percent month-on-month rise in June on the back of strong exports of big-ticket items. In a two-month comparison, output in May and June fell 1.4 percent compared to March and April.
